Michigan will introduce a new starting quarterback in the fight for the Paul Bunyan Trophy in 2024. Sources tell CBS Sports and 247Sports that the Wolverines will use Davis Warren at quarterback against Michigan State. Warren started the first three games of the 2024 season before losing his job to Alex Orji, who passed him to Jack Tuttle after a few games. Tuttle returns the ball to Warren after Michigan lost to Illinois 21-7.

Warren, a former walk-on, threw two touchdowns and six interceptions (66.7 completion percentage, 444 yards) in his three starts. Michigan beat Fresno State and Arkansas State with Warren and lost to Texas 31-12. The Wolverines failed to get any semblance of a passing game going in the year after winning the national championship. Michigan ranks 113th nationally in offensive yards per game and 133rd in yards per attempt, second-worst in college football.

Orji did not rush for more than 100 yards in any of his three starts, despite going 2-1, beating USC and Minnesota, and losing to Washington (a game in which he was eliminated). Tuttle threw for 98 yards off the bench against the Huskies and 208 yards on 62% passing in the loss to Illinois.

Michigan is 4-1 at home and Michigan State is 1-2 on the road. Michigan leads the all-time series 73-38-5.

Kickoff in Ann Arbor is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET.
