NASCAR Trucks Baptist Health 200 Race Preview

Grant Enfinger secured the first of four championship spots in the NASCAR CRAFTSMAN Truck Series with a win three weeks ago at Talladega. It was Enfinger’s first win of the season and it came at the perfect time, taking him to the final in Phoenix. This week at Homestead-Miami Speedway, one of the other eight championship contenders will be hoping to nab his spot alongside him as the schedule ramps up to the finale. Corey Heim leads the points and a close battle awaits in the final two races before Phoenix. Just five points separate Ty Majeski in fourth place from Rajah Caruth in fifth, with Taylor Gray lurking just a further eight points behind. The playoff contenders’ goal will be to maximize each of these next two races, but a win would guarantee their progression. Majeski won this race two years ago and he hopes he can repeat it this week to join Enfinger as a Final Four driver. It will be the 28th series race at this track and the season still hangs in the balance for the playoff contenders.

Homestead-Miami Speedway’s uniquely rough surface and multi-grooved turns have made it one of the most exciting tracks on the program. The track’s progressive banking gives drivers plenty of lanes, making overtaking easier than on some other 1.5-mile ovals. This track’s preferred line is on the outside wall where the banking is steepest, but the middle and bottom lines are also open throughout the race, allowing riders to move through the field. Given the track’s old, abrasive surface, drivers and teams will also need to keep an eye on tire management during refueling runs. While the many grooves and tire wear encourage overtaking, position on the track is still important and it is still advantageous to start at the front at the start or any other restart. Only two of the 26 series races at this track were won by someone who started outside the top 15, but drivers often came from behind to finish in the top 10. While qualifying is an important advantage, it doesn’t mean you have a driver should be counted. Multiple cautions during races at Homestead can give teams a chance to adjust their machines, and the resulting restarts give others a chance to gamble on new tires or track position.

Corey Heim leads the CRAFTSMAN Truck Series playoff standings, but would like to secure his spot in the championship finals as quickly as possible with a win this weekend. He led the most laps in this race last season (57) and won both stages before finishing the race in third place. That was his second top-five finish in two starts at the track, and if that speed is still there this season, Heim will be hard to beat and could secure his spot in Phoenix with a trip to Victory Lane. Nick Sanchez could be another driver to watch out for. The playoff contender started this race from pole position last year and picked up stage points in both segments before falling to 17th at the finish. He’s fighting from behind to make it to the championship in Phoenix and still has two races left to get the job done. Points will be a key goal for him in Homestead, which is good news for fantasy squads as he works to overcome a 20-point deficit in the top four. Ben Rhodes also drove a good race at this track last season. He fought his way up from 21st on the grid, finished the second stage in the top 10 and finished the race with a lead of 22 laps and a second place. This was his first top-five finish on the track and also his second top-10 finish in a row. A top result this week would end his current three-race streak of finishes outside the top 20.

Further down the price list, Tyler Ankrum has been posting consistent top-15 rankings for fantasy managers with occasional top-10 finishes for several weeks. He must overcome a 23-point deficit to fourth in the standings to compete against Phoenix in the championship, but he also enters the weekend on a streak of nine consecutive finishes of 15th or better. A small increase in these results would close the points gap, but even maintaining his current form helps many fantasy squads. Daniel Dye appears to have put his playoff exit on the back burner by posting his second top-five finish of the season last time out at Talladega. Florida is his home state and he finished 12th in the Xfinity Series a week ago at Las Vegas, another 1.5-mile oval. Those two things could give him an extra boost this weekend. He has qualified well on 1.5 mile ovals all season and will look to translate that speed into another top race result this week. Finally, Connor Mosack returns to Spire Motorsports for the fifth time this week. His last outing with Spire resulted in a front-row start and a top-10 finish at Kansas. He earned his first top-10 finish of the series in Charlotte in May and is looking to add another to his part-time resume this week at Homestead.
